Weekly Listen #4

I stumbled on Kevin Rose’s podcast and decided to watch this one first. I was excited to find this because I watched his first interviews about 12 years ago with tech entrepreneurs and got a lot out of them. I think he called the show The Foundation back then.

One piece they talk about is encouraging failure and learning from failure for kids which I believe is important too. I’ve been enjoying watching my oldest who is 3 during soccer on Saturday mornings. He’s young so he’s failing a lot whether he picks up the soccer ball instead of kicking it or doesn’t understand the drill. Rather than correct him, I just watch him. He’s having fun anyway so that’s another reason I sit back. He doesn’t need my help.

I was thinking the other day at some point that his consciousness will develop and we’ll see how he reacts to knowing about these small failures.

Website Blocker

I finally took action to eliminate social media usage on my desktop during the workday. I downloaded the Cold Turkey software and Chrome Extension. I was getting tired of how much I was doing quick checks on these sites in between meetings or before starting something.

Self control alone was not enough cause I created some bad habits.

A few months ago, I successfully kicked these habits on my mobile device so I am now trying to do the same on desktop but need some help with this website blocker. I am one day in so still early but excited for the sense of focus and joy that should come as I kick this bad habits. I am also reminding myself these platforms are good for learning from others and getting ideas. They just need to be controlled in earned, scheduled sessions. Still tinkering with how I plan time for this in my day.

I’ll leave it at this but plant a quick seed that I’ve been thinking about and conversing with my wife about phone usage for our kids which is a few years away but relates to this habit I need to kick. That was partly why I kicked the mobile habits so that I was setting a good example.

Weekend Listen

I ended up listening to this podcast twice this week during my commute to work and while doing dishes at night.

It is definitely packed with information about AI and listening to it again helped connect a few more dots.

Hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Today’s Priority

My son is 3 years old today. I remembered last year feeling very happy and excited to celebrate his 2nd birthday. I love the prep that goes into it. Wrapping gifts, picking up food, making dessert, setting up, etc. Then the day is pure presence and fun. I realized last year it was the similar feelings of anticipation and excitement I had when my birthday rolled around as a kid. This is a perfect example of seeing and feeling the world through your kids as a parent which happens daily.

Knowing this was something I enjoyed a lot last year, I made it a priority today even though it’s Tuesday. I worked till about 11AM and stopped. It will be there tomorrow. I went to surprise Jake at his school as a mystery reader and then helped set up our yard to have a few friends over later. We will have sushi at night because it’s Jake’s favorite.

Hoping I can take my kids’ birthdays mostly off from work until they’re off doing something they don’t want me at.
